State of Michigan Real Estate Continuing Education Requirements
The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) is the State’s real estate licensing authority. LARA requires that all licensed real estate agents and brokers meet certain continuing education requirements before their licenses will be renewed:
In addition, licensees cannot duplicate courses during the same 3-year cycle. That means you will receive credit for your courses as long as the course number is different from the other courses that you have taken.
You can check your continuing education credits that were completed prior to January 1, 2015, by visiting LARA's website at https://www.lara.michigan.gov/colaLicVerify/ (after you type in and search for your name, a box will appear with your license information. From there, click on “continuing education”). Effective January 1, 2015, Michigan real estate continuing education schools are no longer permitted to report course completions to LARA. Pursuant to R339.2504a(2) of LARA’s Administrative Code, you must keep the Certificates of Completion for a minimum of four years. Please make sure to hold onto your Certificate of Completion for at least four years in case you are audited by LARA.
If you have any questions about your real estate continuing education hours or courses, contact LARA at (517) 373-7353 or by e-mail at bcslic@michigan.gov.
- Michigan has a renewal cycle of 3 years for all real estate licenses. During the 3-year license cycle, each licensee needs to complete 18 hours of continuing education. The current cycle is the M-cycle, which started on November 1, 2012, and ends on October 31, 2015.
- The current 3-year licensing cycle began on November 1, 2012 (which means licensees need their full 18 credit hours of Michigan real estate continuing education before October 31, 2015, for their licenses to be renewed).
- Licensees are required to take a minimum of 2 credit hours per calendar year of continuing education that involves law, rules and court cases regarding real estate. All of our courses contain at least two hours of law, which satisfies your yearly legal course requirement.
- Though the average is 6 credit hours per year, you can take your minimum of 2 credit hours per year (for law) and spread out the other credit hours over the 3 years as you desire, as long as you have a total of at least 18 hours of continued education from approved real estate courses by the conclusion of the 3-year cycle.
